Passion, investment, memories
The History of the Retro Motor Show - Key Moments from Its Inception to the Latest Edition. Check out all the highs and lows from the past 8 years.
Classic automobiles are currently experiencing a renaissance. More and more people are interested in acquiring vintage cars—whether for investment purposes or as collectibles. Beyond business and passion, there's another category of enthusiasts who have a particular fondness for vehicles with character. These are individuals who occasionally like to immerse themselves in nostalgia and drift back to the era of “the good old days.”
The Retro Motor Show meets all these needs and preferences - currently the largest vintage vehicle fair in Poland. However, it hasn't always had the scale and grandeur it boasts today.
8 Years and 7 Editions
2016: Enthusiastic Beginnings
The story of the Retro Motor Show began in 2016, when vintage automobiles were given more space and attention than just a modest stand at the Poznań Motor Show. In November, the first edition of the Retro Motor Show took place, featuring over 300 vehicles.
2017: Growing Ambitions
The enthusiastic reception of the event format led to heightened expectations the following year. More than 450 vehicles were showcased across 6 pavilions at the Poznań International Fairgrounds. Over 25,000 visitors attended the three-day event, marking the start of what was beginning to be considered a major spectacle rather than just a trade fair.
2018: Attendance Frenzy
In 2018, the show reached an attendance frenzy. With 5 pavilions and 700 vehicles, nearly 37,000 people visited the event, thanks in part to combined tickets with another accompanying event. The Wielkopolski Automobile Club showcased 100 vehicles in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poland’s regained independence. It was confidently labeled as the largest event of its kind in Poland.
2019: Strengthening the Position
The fourth edition solidified the Retro Motor Show’s strong position in the market and secured its place on the automotive enthusiasts' calendar. Classic car fans and those interested in purchasing flocked to the event, indicating that it was poised for continued growth.
2020: Pandemic Crisis
However, the pandemic struck, forcing the organizers to cancel the event at what seemed to be the peak of its popularity.
2021: Struggle to Return
The year 2021 was marked by a heroic struggle to return to normalcy. Organizers faced pandemic-related restrictions and attempted to recreate even a fraction of what they had previously offered. The attendees’ hunger and longing for in-person events were evident in the turnout, making it one of the three largest events organized by the Poznań International Fairgrounds in 2021.
2022: Return to the Top
The Retro Motor Show made a triumphant return, surpassing previous levels. Nearly 200 exhibitors showcased 880 vehicles across 35,000 square meters of exhibition space. The event garnered significant attention, drawing over 29,000 visitors. It was the largest event of its kind in Poland.
2023: Historic Edition
The 2023 edition went down in history as the absolute best. With 927 vehicles on display, including the star attraction, the Ferrari F40, the event set a new record for attendance. Although attendance was slightly lower than in previous years, it was notable for being the first time without combined tickets for another accompanying event. This single event alone drew 25,453 visitors.
A Multifaceted Event
As demonstrated, the Retro Motor Show has long attracted enthusiasts and expanded its audience of classic car lovers. Its multifaceted nature is a significant asset, reaching a diverse group of attendees. What does this include?
1. Exhibition
Exhibitors include automotive clubs, car museums, and clubs dedicated to specific car brands, showcasing their collections and often creating thematic space arrangements.
2. Vintage Vehicle Marketplace
Not all vehicles are just for show. Many can be purchased—either from professional vintage car dealers or individual collectors. This is a fantastic opportunity to compare numerous offers in one place and consult with appraisers and experts.
3. Restoration Academy
The demonstration and training area is another vital part of the Retro Motor Show. Mechanical and automotive school students eagerly observe the work of vehicle restoration specialists. The stage features true experts who gladly share their knowledge with the audience.
4. Fashion Zone
The Retro Motor Show also celebrates fashion that goes hand-in-hand with automotive history. Visitors can explore the Retro Wardrobe and see how they’d look with a fascinator, lace parasol, or hairband. Those with vintage clothing from the '80s or earlier in their wardrobe can enter the fair with a special discounted ticket.
5. Concerts and Dance
The event is complemented by a live band performing both old and new songs in swing versions. Shy attendees may simply sway to the music, while the more daring head to the dance floor, often in retro attire, for a dance party reminiscent of days gone by. All of this takes place amidst hundreds of vintage vehicles, creating a unique atmosphere.
Countdown to September
The next opportunity to experience all these emotions, with nostalgia and sentiment at the forefront, will be from September 20-22, 2024. The event takes place at the Poznań International Fairgrounds. Tickets can be purchased online or at the venue, with discounted prices available until the end of August—starting from 29 PLN.
